Secrets Savored Weeks 1 & 2 : My Experience

A few weeks ago, I posted an entry entitled, “Moms Need Moms,” in which I expressed the need to connect with other christian moms.  Since making that post, I have actually enrolled in a mentoring class, offered at a local church in my area. It is called “Secrets Savored.” It is an eight week program, built around Titus 2:4-5, in which older christian mothers mentor younger mothers, through practical homemaking lessons and spiritual insights. It’s like a biblical home economics class. The author of the curriculum/book and founder of the program is Dianne Lynn Dougharty, (BTW: I’ve met her. She’s so kind and she truly has a passion for mentoring younger women).

Classes are small, intimate, informal and meet once per week. They are held at one of the mentor’s home. There are fifteen younger moms and three older moms/mentors. So far, I’ve attended two sessions and I’ve enjoyed both.

I was a bit nervous going into the first session, mainly because I did not know if I would be comfortable. However, the mentors were very nice, welcoming and genuine, which was refreshing. The other moms were nice too. I was way more relaxed and calm during the second week.

The lessons are very practical and easy to incorporate into my daily routine. During the first week, we introduced ourselves, discussed kitchen organization and food safety. We actually went inside the kitchen and one of the mentors showed us how she organizes her kitchen. Let me tell you. This lady is organized! If I can take half of what she taught us and implement it in my kitchen, my life will be much easier. There are also, tons of great recipes in the book.

The second week was a bit more interesting. We discussed kitchen gadgets and started our first bible study session, which was about Eve, Genesis 1:26, 2:7-9, 15-25, 3:1-16. We discussed the ways in which she used her influence to persuade Adam and how we are to  use our influence to build our husbands and/or others in our lives? The questions asked during the discussion were very introspective and thought provoking. I really love the fact that we study different woman of the bible each week. In my opinion, it is the perfect marriage between natural and spiritual. I’m so excited about next week’s class. I’ll be blogging about my experiences each week until I’ve completed the class.
